Whirlwind
Today, I’m writing from the Rush Hospital surgical lounge as I wait on Suzanne’s outcome. The last time I was here three years ago, it was a fourteen-hour event that resulted in me being the only one left in the place. I’m not expecting that today, but getting here has been a whirlwind.
Two weeks ago yesterday, Suanne had a Biopsy to check out the very small nodule on her left lung; One week ago yesterday we learned the results from that biopsy that the nodule was malignant and related to her original cancer; Then last Thursday, the Rush ‘Tumor Board’ discussed her case and recommended that she have a lobectomy to remove the portion of her lung where the nodule resided; Friday we met the the surgeon would will perform the surgery; which brings me to today, fifteen days later, and the surgery is currently underway. I’m not sure all these events could happen any quicker.
From what I can assess, her oncologist, surgeon, and any other medical professional I have spoken with is very optimistic about her case. Yes, the original cancer has returned, but, and it’s a big BUT, there is only one site after three years. Her original cancer was very aggressive and to have only one metastatic location is not what they were expecting. That just goes along with the long list of things that didn’t go as expected with Suzanne’s case.
- No rash or skin issues from radiation
- No reactions to chemotherapy
- Never lost her sense of taste
- Removed her feeding tube
- Able to eat solid foods
- Able to carry on a conversation
- No multi-metastatic locations
- and most importantly – still alive after three years
Mentally, this has been a major setback for her, she felt that her new life was really settling into a routine. Now, after a recovery period of a few weeks, Suzanne is not supposed to have any noticeable physical issues after having twenty percent of her lung capacity removed (unless she decides to start running marathons) So soon her life will resume and plans will again be made for our future together.
UPDATE: Suzanne is in her hospital room and expected to be here probably through Friday as a precaution before we head home. The surgery was a little more extensive than expected. I’m sure she will be moving slowly for the next week or so but as she would tell you, she has lots of quilts to finish and gardening season is rapidly approaching so I expect her not to waist any time.
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
