Wednesday was quite the day. When we left home, Google indicated a longer drive than normal and before we even got to I-94 Dan Ryan, Google had us get off the interstate and drive straight north through the streets of south Chicago all the way to Rush. First time since we started going to Rush that this happened.

Next up, accessing her port for her CT. Since we were running a little late, our tensions were high. It had already been a long night as Suzanne had a premedication schedule for her allergy to the CT dye. With Suzanne seated and just as they were accessing her port, I got a call that the computers went down in that department in the Hospital so “could we just re-schedule?” LOL. Three months ago, the out-patient CT clinic would not do her CT with dye because of her allergy to the dye, so this time it was scheduled at the Hospital. Quick thinking, I called her Dr and got them to agree to another CT without dye, ran down to the outpatient clinic, and got them to re-schedule her there before the onslaught from the hospital arrived as now, all the CT’s to be done by the hospital would now come here.

Her oncologist visit was very cordial, all the regular questions to which Suzanne replied no to new symptoms or complaints; so that was that! We then talked about how we got to where we were, fifteen months after surgery and still cancer-free. Then, in the middle of our discussion, Dr. J made this statement. “This is the best possible outcome” and followed up with the comments inferring that it was cases like Suzanne’s that keep them doing what they do.

Wait, let me go back to: BEST POSSIBLE OUTCOME? I’m sure that is doctor speak, one of those lines they are all taught in school to say. But for us common folk, what does that really mean?

BEST – (def) of the most excellent, effective, or desirable type or quality. We say something is OK, pretty good, good, great, but best? To me, best means just that, nothing could be better, it is absolutely, perfect!

POSSIBLE – (def) able to happen although not certain. So if you roll a pair of dice, there are thirty-six different possible results, who knows how many result combinations were possible with Suzanne’s cancer, but I’m sure it is more than a pair of dice could predict

OUTCOME – (def) the way a thing turns out; a consequence. So when you have completed a project or job, the result of your work is the outcome. It’s what you are able to show for your work.

So, to sum it up, the doctors view Suzanne’s cancer case as: the most desirable way things could have ever turned out.

Our response, we thanked them for their hard, never-ending work on her case, Then Suzanne looked up and thanked God for his part in all this.
