First’s
We are all familiar with the saying “There’s a first time for everything”. Many of those first’s are locked into our memories forever. First’s like: your first kiss, the first time you drove a stick shift, the birth of your first child, or the first child getting onto the bus for their first time. Yep, many of our firsts are first’s for the one we share it with as well.
Doesn’t matter your age, first’s continue to be inevitable and last night I had another first. It wasn’t one I was looking forward to but knew it was going to happen. I’ve been putting it off for quite a while now but sometimes you just have to pull the bandaid off.
Last night, for the first time since Suzanne’s surgery in February, I ate supper in a sit-down restaurant as my wife of 32 years sat across the table and all she could do is watch me eat. Trying to make dinner small talk as I ate was tough. What else do you talk about at the restaurant other than what you are both eating? As we talked afterward, Suzanne faced just as many struggles with the situation as I did. It was the simple desire to just reach out and take a drink of water as it sat on the table in front of her that brought her to tears.
Now that first is behind us both and more first’s are on the horizon. Things like going out to dinner with friends, traveling cross country to see the sites and visit relatives, and for her, even reaching for that glass on the supper table to take a drink. All of these and many more first’s are yet to come.
But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
Matthew 6:33
