Silence is Golden
We both woke this morning at about the same time. When that happens, usually one of us jumps up and turns on the coffee. This morning was different. This morning, Suzanne rolled over into my arms and just lay there for the longest time in Silence.
A lot of our time since this all started has been spent together in Silence. Awkward moments during mealtime where we just stare into space as we eat, quietly driving to an appointment, or just watching TV where nothing is said for long periods of time. Who said ‘Silence is Golden’?
As humans, interaction with others is part of our makeup. Throughout this whole pandemic thing, we all long for the return to a normal life of face to face communication with family & friends. Being able to see others face as we talk in the workplace; a glancing smile as you pass someone in the grocery store; shaking the hand of a friend or giving a loving hug to someone as you enter the church on Sunday morning. All of these things define us as humans.
So I wondered, why is Silence Golden? As it turns out, there are many health benefits to being silent: it lowers blood pressure; relieves tension; lessens insomnia; and even results in the creation of new brain cells. Who knew?
So, I’m OK with the silence we share together right now. Somehow, If the quiet time we share; If the stillness that seems to permeate our house; If the tranquility of the mornings; If all of this makes my wife a healthier person; Silence is good by me.
A time to tear, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak
Ecclesiastes 3:7
