Mixed Emotions

Mixed Emotions

Yesterday was supposed to be a wonderful & joyous day for Suzanne. Yesterday was the day she finally was able to have her feeding tube removed. Postponed because of snowmageddon last week, yesterday afternoon, in her Gibson Hospital doctor’s office, the 5-second procedure was performed and Suzanne was set free from the protruding plastic which has been the cause of much frustration and has limited parts of her life for over a year. Yep, yesterday was to be a spectacular day.

But yesterday was not all confetti and blowing horns. Yesterday morning, Suzanne sat with a close friend as they shared in the loss of her friend’s mom. Passing the evening before, Suzanne was compelled to spend time with her friend as this soul was one that Suzanne too, considered and called “mom”.

So how did we get to this point? We have to go back to when Suzanne and I were first married. Attending Church, Suzanne had met a number of new people as she was new to our community. As it turned out, there was another family I had already become close with so that naturally brought us all together. Then, at the death of the wife’s father, Suzanne appeared at “mom’s” house, moved in, and worked in the kitchen helping organize food and keeping the place clean. This act of kindness cemented Suzanne a place in their family as an honorary member and the friendship between her and those siblings was set.

Over the years, Suzanne continued to be a presence at family events; graduations, birthday parties, weddings, and more. Her status in the family was one of semi-adopted. And as for “mom” Suzanne was a part of her life as well. visiting, food, transportation to church, and where ever she felt she could help. “Mom” was truly a second mom to Suzanne so her loss was very heartfelt.

Waking yesterday, Suzanne knew it was going to be a tough day, as spending time with her friend was of prime importance. At the end of the day though, the joy of knowing another step has been taken to get her life back, made this day one of extreme mixed emotions.

Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep.
