Monday’s Entertainment
I really struggled with how I was going to approach this post. As much entertainment as we got today, it could very easily be a post about bad judgment.
Yesterday and through last night we received four inches of rain. That much rain is a guarantee that our bottom ground west of the house will flood and flow over our road west of the bridge. You see, on the other side of the bridge the road takes a dip and provides a great waterway, and with this much rain, we know it’s not going to be deep. Today was no exception.
If your heading west on our road during this food event, our driveway is the last exit before your car or truck goes swimming. So on a warm day, Suzanne & I grab the beverage of our choice and sit out on the porch swing and watch all the vehicles speed up to the water’s edge and stop. You can hear their brains saying “it doesn’t look that deep” at which point the vast majority make a good judgment call, back up to our convenient turn-a-round, and drive off from whence they came.
More times than I can count, we have discussed how we should set up a toll booth at the driveway’s edge. Or, maybe a lemonade stand or even a snack cart. People often roll down their windows and have a conversation with us about if we think they could make it. Semis have to back up a half-mile to the previous intersection where there is enough room to turn around.
Today, we had a huge camper with a car in tow stop at the water’s edge. Needless to say, watching him try to back that rig up with a car behind it was worth the price of admission. As he tried multiple times to do the impossible of backing all those wheels into our driveway, I went out and suggested that he drop the car to make it more maneuverable. After another twenty minutes of futile attempts, he finally took my suggestion. As his wife drove the car away, he was able to get the rest of the vehicle heading the other way, and off he went.
So where does the bad judgment come into play? All this occurs as each driver decided to drive around the barricades back at the Goodwine corner a half a mile back. Because they are all in such a hurry, they assume they know better than the Highway Department who warns them that the road is closed because of high water.
Then to top it off, as the evening nears, these ‘Brain Challenged Drivers’ as Suzanne refers to them want to get home so bad that judgment is even more impaired. Tonight was no exception. As we were eating dinner Suzanne commented that a little red truck headed across the bridge. We both waited for a few minutes and noticed that they never came back and turned around. So on went my boots as my dinner got cold to discover that the little truck was sideways and half off the road down at the low spot
His bad judgment at this time of night not only endangered him but now the fire department who has to come out and rescue him in the dark. Bad judgment never just affects the one who makes that bad decision. It’s like dominoes all lined up in a row, the first one falls and then the whole line follows.
More than likely, we won’t get another entertaining day like today till next spring. But when the flowers begin to bloom again and you decide to drive around the barricades, don’t forget to drop a quarter in the bucket when you turn around in our driveway.
Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.
